What if you ran it like a tournament, but the losers, not the winners, advance to the next round - example: eight guys equal four matches (maybe loser is first three taps), those four losers equal two matches (again three taps), and those two losers (final round) square off (maybe five taps to ensure exhaustion) while the other six guys gather ever closer, getting themselves rock hard and ready to jump the loser en mass at the exact moment of the final tap.
Could do it with greater numbers, but would need to give some guys byes in the opening round.
