Not all that close; but if happenstance takes you down DC/N. VA way, I'm usually here at the matroom. Much info about me, pics of matroom in profile.

I welcome new guys. I think it's healthy for everyone to take on guys from first & second, or so timers to those with a hundred-plus opponents in their profiles. It's a "question of balance."

In my opinion a newbie is better off wrestling experienced men both for the tips they can gain and also because there is less chance of being accidentally injured. In my early days I was definitely guilty of applying subs holds too hard and too quickly. There was no malice; I was just so pleased to actually get my opponent in a hold. Experience taught me to take things easier.

When I host a newbie here, he gets a safety briefing before we hit the mats. Sometimes they still try some of the cranks and chokes they see on TV, so having a strong and ready neck is de rigueur–more so than when facing the more experienced. Before any takedowns or more egregious actions involving falls, a briefing on how to fall (unstiffening, .rolls, breakfalls) usually are in order as well. I try to seek out newbies for a third of my opponents, the more experienced a third, those in between, a third. Other times I find myself durned lucky if I find anyone to take me on.

Could not agree more, how are you going to learn good holds if the other guy doesn't know them either. Trouble is a lot of experienced guys might not want to take on a "green" fighter.

You are right, but from my experience, most of the good and experienced fighters do not miss the opportunity to initiate a beginner and to invite him to "the club". :)

As a newbie, who to look for as a potential opponent? :)

When looking for another beginner as your wrestling date, you may think it is better as the match is going to be more even / balanced and it won't hurt so much! :D My experience says it really doesn't work like this. ;)

Meeting a skilled wrestler means meeting someone who:
1) has met many skilled and unskilled fighters before,
2) knows a bit how the fight is going on, what hurts, which hold can cause an injury etc.,
3) has reccomendations in profile you can read
4) is not afraid to meet other guys and usually it is easier to agree about a meeting,
5) probably is willing to coach you a bit and teach you some of his skills,
6) also was a beginner once
...

From my point of view, definitely do not be afraid of skilled wrestlers as a newbie!
Enjoy! :)

If you ever make it my way, I'd take you on. YOur past opponent count puts you in the top 3 percent of the site's members. The count is important for attracting opponents just as a high ratio of number of recommendations divided by number of opponents. Hope to tangle with you one day.

Good points Paul.
You get experience even from losing. Every time I get trapped in a hold I learn what not to do next time - or try not to ; )
Losing can also be as much fun as winning.

You know what you are talking about! :) You were one of my early oppononents and I made some good experience with you definitely. (It was a nice meeting despite the skills and weight difference that time.) ;-)

Lots of good fun. The puddles of sweat attested to that. Happy to give a rematch. You can start on top and I'll have to escape first - drain my energy to make it more fair ; )
